Rule #21: Be Compassionate
We need to make a conscious effort to give compassion to ourselves, others, and the world. Compassion is showing kindness, care, and a willingness to help others. The following words are synonyms of compassion: sympathy, empathy, care, concern, sensitivity, warmth, love, tenderness, mercy, tolerance, humanity, and charity. Why should we be compassionate? The answer is very simple. Everyone is in need of compassion- you, your friends, family, acquaintances, work colleagues, strangers you meet, and even your enemies. The reason is because we are all human and are facing our own challenges and struggles in life. A lot of times we are tempted to directly express our anger, resentment, sorrow, pain, frustration, regret, judgments, etc. when we are very upset and our emotional state is upside down. But sometimes what we really need to do is just take a few deep breaths, quiet our minds and choose to be compassionate. Compassion is a gift. For when we are compassionate to others, we in turn will receive compassion. Since compassion is a state of love, your mind, body, and soul will reap positive benefits. Let go of your judgments and accept others. Strive to adopt a healthier lifestyle of compassion, you will be blessed with a more harmonious and peaceful life.
Exercise #21- Be compassionate: Think of a person, situation, or challenge that you’re currently struggling with. Allow yourself to really “feel” what is bothering you. Make the commitment to adopt compassion in this particular situation. Whether you’re struggling with yourself, someone else, or a challenge at large, commit to yourself that you will exert compassion. Ask God/Higher Power/The Universe to extend compassion to you as you move forward with love and grace.
