Rule #19: Be Present

The past decade has produced unprecedented advances with regard to the Internet, social media, cell phones, and other technology that offers us various ways to connect with others—no matter where we are in the world. It’s truly a blessing to be living in such an exciting era that offers us unlimited opportunities to create, cultivate, and connect. We are constantly emailing, texting, Facebooking, Instagramming, Snapchatting, tweeting, etc…But are these various communication channels truly allowing us to connect with ourselves, others, and the world around us? Many of us have allowed these communication outlets to take control over our lives. We are all so concerned with connecting via social media outlets that we, ironically, have disconnected. We have such a hard time sitting still and being present in the moment because we are always focusing on something else. This disconnect has affected all of our generation. We are living in a state of “constant contact,” unable to live in the present moment. Our minds are constantly racing as to what we need to do next. Through our constant efforts to connect and communicate, many of us have somehow lost our sense of awareness. We need to commit to live fully present in our own lives so that we can truly connect with ourselves, each other, and the world around us.

Exercise #19- Be Present: Make it a priority to be immersed in your daily life. One of the most powerful mindfulness practices we can adopt is to start immersing ourselves fully into our own lives by fully engaging our minds, bodies, and souls into all that it is we do. Since our minds have become programmed to constantly race and think about all of the things that we need to do, this practice is vital to incorporate into our lives if we want to live fully in the present. The goal of “MINDFUL IMMERSION” is to cultivate contentment in the present moment, regardless of what you’re doing. Whether it be your daily responsibilities, activities, chores, work, or your interactions with your friends, family, coworkers, and strangers…completely immerse yourself—your mind, body, and soul—to be present in that situation. Take your regular work responsibilities and communication interactions, for example… Instead of anxiously wanting to complete these obligations and quickly finish the tasks at hand, allow yourself to be fully present and live in the moment…Being AWARE, ALERT, and ACTIVELY engaging in your life…will allow you to begin experiencing life like you never have before. Your mind, body, and soul will be fully engaged in living in the present moment so that you can live your life to the fullest!
